My Go-To Messy Waves | A Hair Tutorial

In the summertime I have a few go-to hairstyles. When the heat rises I either let my hair air dry, throw it in a topknot bun or put in a little more effort with some beachy, messy waves. The first two styles are pretty self-explanatory: heat-free and easy! But voluminous, laidback waves can be a great summertime choice since, well frankly, the sleek and straight look isn't an option for me with the intense humidity. This style is actually really easy to achieve and - BONUS - also looks great the next day!

My trick to getting perfect summertime waves is to curl the hair in opposite directions. Curling all of your sections the same way can cause your hair to blend together and look like one big wave. Alternate the direction and you'll end up with separated, "piecey" sections. Or, you could just watch the video tutorial to see exactly how I achieve this hairstyle, step by step ;)

What I Used:
- Tresemme Heat Tamer Spray
- Hot Tools 1" curling iron, I don't use the clamp so if you have a clamp-less wand that will work perfectly!
- Frederic Fekkai Sheer hold hairspray

- Big Sexy Hair POW! Powder Play volumizing/texturizing powder
- volumizing teasing comb

Sultry Summer Makeup Look ♥ Turquoise Smokey Eye

It looks like summer has finally hit in full force! I can't believe tomorrow is July 4th already! Usually I don't let a little hot weather scare me into going bare-faced but even I, an avid makeup lover, have pared my routine down for the daytime. The hot, muggy weather leaves me feeling a little less than inspired. So when do I get my makeup fix, you ask? As soon as the sun goes down!  Summer nights are perfect for trying out more full-on makeup looks and this one is no exception. Not to mention it includes a brand new product from the drugstore, the Maybelline Color Tattoo Pure Pigment eyeshadow in Never Fade Jade. You can imagine my excitement when I discovered a new line of eyeshadows at the drugstore, and PIGMENTS no less!  The coolest thing about this product? I find it goes on beautifully wet or dry. I have a few other shades as well that I'm excited to try out. So check out the video tutorial below to see how I achieved this sultry, turquoise smokey eye!

May 2013 Beauty Favorites!

Hey guys! Long time no blog! Things got a little crazy over the month of May and unfortunately I wasn't able to blog as much as I wanted. From traveling to LA and wrestling around with my new studio lighting - let's just say I had a lot on my plate! However I'm getting back into the swing of things with my monthly beauty favorites and I can't wait to share them with you all! More recently my go-to look as been a "slightly smokey eye" or winged liner and a bold lip. The beauty of it is that it looks like you've spent more time on your makeup than you really have! Nobody has to know it was a cinch, right? ;)

This go-to look definitely reflects in my favorites for May: a few face products, minimal eye products and lots and LOTS of lippies! Hope you enjoy!

My Faves:

- Covergirl Clean Whipped Creme foundation, shade 305

- Revlon Colorstay concealer, 02 light

- MAC Tan pigment

- Loreal Infallible gel eyeliner, Blackest Black

- Milani baked blushes in Berry Amore and Dolce Pink

-MAC lip pencils in Cherry and Magenta

-MAC Lady Danger lipstick

- Maybelline Vivid lipsticks in Vibrant Mandarin and Brazen Berry

- Joico Power Spray

- Plus White 5 Minute Whitening System (CVS)

Also since it's graduation season, a BIG congrats to all of the grads out there!

Fresh Face | My Dewy Skin Routine

So I'll admit it, I was definitely somewhat of a late bloomer when it came to discovering the Beauty Blender. Could a sponge shaped like a teardrop REALLY be all that amazing for applying your foundation? Well friends, the answer is a big YES! But you probably already knew that right? ;)

Not only can this little beauty tool give a flawless, airbrushed finish when applying liquid foundation... but recently I discovered that it has the same effect when used to apply a cream or liquid highlighter. And voila! My new, dewy skin foundation routine was born!  Okay so here's the formula:

Luminous foundation
 + Beauty Blender
liquid highlighter
+ MAC Fix+

= Luminous, dewy skin that's NOT greasy or shiny! Woot woot!

Since this routine is geared more towards looking radiant (not shiny), I chose to use the Loreal True Match Lumi foundation. Maybe I was a late bloomer with this product too? It reminds me of a less expensive version of the NARS Sheer Glow foundation. It's blendable, gives great coverage and it's luminous without looking like an oil slick. I've really been loving this routine and I hope you will try it out with products in your own collection :)

Product List:

Loreal Revitalift Miracle Blur (more about this later... it really is a Miracle!)

Loreal True Match Lumi foundation - W 1-2 porcelain-light ivory and W-3 Nude Beige mixed (applied with a Beauty Blender)

Rimmel Stay Matte powder, Nude Beige

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind concealer, brightening shade

Revlon Age Defying concealer, light/medium

Ben Nye Cameo Powder

Josie Maran Argan Illuminizer

Mac Fix+

Tropical Green & Coral Makeup | Sigma Resort Palette

Hi everyone! I'm back with a fun, bright green and coral look using the new Sigma Beauty Resort Palette! My favorite thing about this limited edition palette is the fact that it includes a well-rounded assortment of colors and pretty much everything you would need to create a look inspired by the tropics. The press release for this product says it was "created as a beauty accompaniment to your weekend getaways and summer travels..."

Coincidentally my first thought when I started playing around with this palette was that I could easily throw it in my travel makeup bag for vacations or day trips to the shore and have everything I would need to create a wide variety of vibrant looks. The gorgeous and highly-pigmented eyeshadows range from functional neutrals to playful brights. As if that weren't enough, it comes with a lovely coral blush, glamorous liquid highlighter and a double-ended eyeliner pencil. I was very impressed by the quality of the additional products in the palette and the rich turquoise and cocoa eyeliner shades are creamy, transfer easily and have some SERIOUS staying power. The Resort Palette has been one of the first spring/summer product launches that I have been truly excited about - this one has you covered from the sand dunes to dinner! The inside cover also houses a jumbo mirror, something I find note-worthy and definitely helpful when travelling.

And now... the swatches!!

L-R: Heavenly blush, Liquid Highighter

L-R: Papaya, Moonbeam, Neela and Midori eyeshadows
Don't mind my goosebumps! ;)

L-R: Muse, Fawn, Luna and Topaz eyeshadows

I love the fact that Sigma has included every single color that reminds me summer and the possibilities and looks are endless! Don't forget to use the code AAM2013 and get 10% off your order from Sigma Beauty!

Colorful Spring Makeup Tutorial | Purple, Pink & Blue

Although it hasn't felt much like spring around here (it just snowed yesterday....), people are saying it technically began four days ago. I'm not so convinced ;) Either way the warmer weather has to come eventually, right? So why not start practicing some fun, colorful looks right now!

There really isn't much rhyme or reason to this particular eye look, I was just feeling inspired by the beautiful, bold shades in my Vice Palette by Urban Decay. I just took some of my favorite bright colors, "swirled" them all together and this is what I came up with! :)

I hope you guys like this tutorial and don't be afraid to play around with color! You know what they say... neon is the new neutral!

My Go-To Glam Makeup | Full-Face Routine

One of the reasons I love playing with different makeup looks is because it allows you to become whoever you want to be that day. Sometimes I'm feeling more laidback and casual (hence my "no makeup" makeup routine) and other days I want to inject some va-va-voom!

(This post is all about the va-va-voom!...)

After a recent girls' night out I was inspired to recreate the completed "glammed up" look that I wore out that night. I'll take you through all of my getting-ready steps from my foundation, to winged out eyeliner, contouring and even a punchy, bright lip color. If you are loving the current bright lip trend as much as I am, then don't forget to check out the Maybelline Vivid lipsticks in your local drugstore! I can't rave enough about the beautiful color selections and comfortable formula they have to offer - I'm wearing the Vivid lipstick in "Vivid Rose" in this video.

Products Used:

Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme foundation, Natural Beige
Kat Von D Tattoo Concealer, Sand
Rimmel Stay Matte powder, Nude Beige

Anastasia Brow Whiz, Ash Blonde
Sigma Light Brow Powder

Urban Decay Naked Basics palette
Urban Decay Naked palette
Loreal Voluminous Smoldering eyeliner
MAC Blacktrack Fluidline
Q-Tips + Simple makeup remover wipes

My "No Makeup" Makeup Routine ... & Ryan Seacrest?!

Hi guys! Since I've really been enjoying watching full-face tutorials on YouTube lately, I felt inspired to film a few of the makeup routines that I've been favoring as well. The one in this post is on the natural end of the spectrum. A lot of times I'll go about my day completely bare-faced and others I want to go all out with my makeup - eyeshadow, lipstick and liner, oh my! Then there are those in-between days when I want to correct some imperfections and even out my skintone while still keeping the look simple and fresh-faced. That's my personal definition of "no makeup" makeup, it's all about enhancing your natural beauty!

You may be thinking the list below seems like a lot of products for a routine where the goal is to look somewhat au naturel (with a few small enhancements). Touche! However, I think that lightly layering products that are geared towards brightening and correcting is the best way for me to achieve this look and make it last. But, you can definitely customize this routine to fit your needs. I'm actually using far less products than I typically do for a full-on weekend or going out look... so it is pretty pared down for me ;) Just reach for the amount of products that work for you! Don't forget to check out the video for the completed look and some additional tricks to achieve a "barely there" makeup look.

Products Used:

Garnier BB Cream (original formula), light/medium - used as moisturizer

Maybelline Age Rewind dark circle concealer, "Brightening" shade
Cargo One Base in OB 01 Ivory
Bare Minerals Well Rested eye brightening powder
Benefit Hello Flawless powder, Never Settle Petal

Urban Decay Naked Basics eyeshadow palette
NARS The Multiple in Copacabana
Maybelline One by One mascara
(You can skip the mascara or opt for a clear formula. I have very light lashes so I like to give them a hint of color)

Urban Decay Afterglow cheek tint in Crush
Maybelline Color Whisper in Lust for Blush

On a completely unrelated note... I recently found out that I've been nominated in a fun poll on where you can vote for your favorite YouTube Makeup Artist! There were so many amazing people on the list and I was just blown away and so flattered to be included! If you'd like to vote for me you can check out the poll page here :)

I've received so many tweets from all of you who have already voted and I want to thank you so much for your support! xoxo

Stay tuned for more completed looks and I hope you're having a great week!

New Makeup Storage/Organization + Room Tour!

Today I am super excited to show you my new makeup storage and my little home office/closet area. It's been a work in progress and I have to thank my wonderful boyfriend for helping me drag all of the new Ikea shelving to our house and setting them up!

For the longest time there really wasn't too much going on in my film room, which is an extra guest room in our house. I had a tiny desk area but I never really did much with it because the room was such an awkward space. We live in a row home which is basically a "hallway" of a house with windows on both ends. The rooms are very long and narrow, making it hard to arrange furniture... and keep my houseplants alive. I didn't feel like this space, that I spend so much time in, was being used to it's full potential. I also wanted the re-design to represent my personal style and break up the space a bit so it didn't feel so much like a bowling alley. However I'm no professional interior designer and I was definitely working within a budget. Also, I didn't want it to feel too fancy or stuffy - after all, it is our house. I wanted the room to still feel "homey" and lived-in but be a place that inspires me creatively at the same time.

I'm beyond thrilled with how it turned out!

Most of the smaller furniture was brought in from other rooms in the house.  The only new additions were the bookcases and picture ledges from Ikea.  I think they add a nice element of minimal design to the room. Not to mention I now have MUCH more storage and opportunity to decorate than I know what to do with. That was another issue I had with the original space. I did take "before" pictures but of course I have yet to track them down after searching through every memory card I own. Just picture bland, boring nothingness ;)

Oh and of course there's my new storage cart for my makeup collection!  I've always tried to keep my collection of products at a reasonable limit. I hate to be wasteful so if I have a product that I don't particularly love, I'll give it away to friends or family. That being said, just by nature of filming beauty videos you do tend to accumulate a lot of, well... stuff! It was getting out of control. So I decided to invest in this new (turquoise!) storage that has some extra room for new additions.

If my collection ever outgrows this storage unit you can go ahead and just check me right into rehab ;) Below you'll find the video tour and a list of the items in my makeup room and where I found them!

Makeup Setup:

Stanton 6 + 1 Drawer Storage Cart in Blue:
(didn't want to splurge on storage but at the time I found this it was 30% off with free shipping so I couldn't resist)

Black vanity: Bed Bath and Beyond

Mirror: HomeGoods

Clear brush container and "Bean bag filler": Michael's

Mercury Glass candleholders: Pottery Barn

Mirrored Cabinet (hair products): HomeGoods

purple curtains: Bed Bath and Beyond

Desk Area:

"Vika Amon/Vika Adils" white table, Ikea

Desk Accessories, knit shawl, planner: Target

White "filing cabinet" w/ basket drawers: HomeGoods

"Ribba" picture ledge: Ikea

Art: Etsy

3 Billy Bookcases + 1 Besta shelf unit: Ikea

Turquoise dresser: Hand-me-down painted "Day at the Jewelers" by Valspar

Mirror, lamp: HomeGoods

Thanks so much for checking back with me and I hope you enjoyed this post! What are some of your makeup organization strategies and tips?

"Naturally Pretty" ♡ Valentine's Day Makeup Tutorial

This year for Valentine's day I thought I would create a look using mostly natural, neutral shades from the Urban Decay Basics palette (LOVE!). But no Valentine's Day makeup would be complete without pink, right? In this tutorial I decided to go for some hot pink shadow in an unexpected place to give this look a hint of rosiness and that "blushing" look. I think hot pink eyeshadow can be worn in a natural way in the same way that a hot pink blush can give you that youthful glow. The trick? Use a small amount on a fluffy brush and blend it over some neutral brown shades, it will dilute the color and help it to blend.  Top it off with some flirty liquid liner and you have a modern take on an ultra-femme look. Don't forget to watch the video tutorial included in this post to see the techniques step by step!

Products Used:

*Sigma Persuade eyeshadow base  //  Urban Decay Naked Basics palette
NYX Retractable waterproof eyeliner in White  //  Wet n Wild "Spoiled Brat" eyeshadow trio (hot pink shade)
Milani Eye Tech liquid eyeliner  //  Loreal Power Volume 24HR Black Smoke mascara

Cargo Medium Matte Bronzer  //  BareMinerals Ready Blush in The Faux Pas
Maybelline Color Whisper "Lust For Blush"  //  Maybelline Vivid lipstick "Pink Pop"

Happy Valentine's Day!

January Makeup & Beauty Favorites! ♥

Hi guys! I'm so excited to share with you all of my beauty obsessions from the month of January! I feel like there's so many products that I haven't had a chance to talk about yet, one of them being my new go-to concealer and foundation in ONE (foundation routine is on the way!).

Not to mention, there are a bazillion colors to choose from - think kid in a candy store! My personal favorite has been Lust for Blush, it's the perfect everyday neutral pink. For more about my recent beauty loves, check out the video below!

Current Skin Care Routine for CLEAR Skin!

I'll be the first one to admit that I'm more than a little lazy when it comes to skin care. For the longest time I had the luxury of being able to switch from product to product and try whatever cleanser, scrub or moisturizer I felt like on a whim. I was so spoiled! I never had to worry about my skin breaking out and I based my selections mostly on the specific scent of the product. Grapefruit or Green Tea? Decisions, decisions.

Ah the good ol' days...

Well, a lot has changed since I last updated you all on my skin care routine. As I explain in the video included in this post I now officially have acne-prone skin, something I never thought I would be dealing with all of sudden and at the age of 26.

The good news is, I've found some really great products that have helped my complexion do a complete turn-around! Not only that, but my skin is now a lot brighter, smoother and more even in tone than before the whole break out fiasco began! By swapping out a few products in my routine, I've been able to keep pesky blemishes at bay and I can now go about my day without wringing out my tube of concealer ;)

The main change has been the addition of a little acne treatment system called Proactive into my skin care regimen - you may have heard of it? ;) After going through the three steps twice a day, my break outs began to decrease significantly. Then about two weeks into using the products, I had the worst break out of them all. It seemed to be bringing all of the trapped blemishes to the surface all at once - needless to say it wasn't a pretty sight. But I'm happy to report that after about a week of that craziness, my acne all but completely stopped. My problem areas didn't even taper off gradually. It literally just stopped. Kinda weird but hey, you won't hear me complaining and for the most part I've been blemish free ever since. And relieved I AM because it was rough going there for a while! I'm not claiming that Proactive is a miracle product and the answer to everyone's prayers. In fact, there could have been a lot of other factors at play including the other products I'm using, etc. All I can do is give my experience and let's just say it has earned it's keep for a while ;)

Products Mentioned:
- Proactive Acne Treatment (Cleanser, Toner and Repairing Lotion) - online/mall kiosk
- L'oreal Collagen Moisture Filler SPF 15
- Lumene Pure Radiance Day Cream SPF 15
- Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes
- Almay Oil-Free eye makeup remover pads
- Burt's Bees Intense Hydration night cream w/ Clary Sage
- Olay Fresh Effects Shine, Shine Go Away (shine minimizing cleanser)

Let me know some of your favorite products or at-home treatments for clear skin!

My Hair Care/Blow Drying Routine & A BIG HAUL!

Hi everyone! Recently it occurred to me that I haven't talked about the subject of hair care in a longggg time. So much has changed in my routine and I've finally reached a "good place" with my hair, which is kind of a big deal considering I absolutely despised it for the majority of my life. I spent most of my high school and college years trying to fight my natural texture which is very dry, limp and frizzy - great combo ;) I tried to change it with heat and lots of it! This led to the obvious: a vicious cycle that only damaged my locks more and more. It was only about two years ago that I finally decided to wave the white flag and give up the never-ending battle of trying to make my hair something that it wasn't. I changed my thinking about hair care all together. Instead of trying to make it look good I focused on keeping it healthy, which in turn made my hair look better than I ever could've imagined because it WAS healthy.

I've reached the point where it will hold pretty much any style I want it to and it's soft, shiny and manageable. If you would have told me that five years ago I never would have believed you. And I have to say, it's just one less thing I have to stress about which is always nice! In the video below I'll show you the products that have helped keep my blonde hair healthy and show you my blow drying routine - which also took me years to master. Just a late bloomer I guess ;)

OH and don't forget to check out my latest drugstore makeup haul that I've also included in this post. It features lots of brand spankin' new products and some first impressions!

Hair Products Mentioned:
- Clear Scalp and Hair Therapy Strong Lengths shampoo (drugstore)
- Wen by Chaz Dean Sweet Almond Mint cleansing conditioner (Sephora or online)
- Matrix Sleek Look Conditioner and Extra Intense Conditioner (Ulta)
- Paul Mitchell Extra Body Daily Boost root lifter (Ulta)
- L'ANZA Healing Strength Neem Plant Silk Serum (Ulta or professional salons)
- Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum (Ulta)
- Wide tooth combs, Ion paddle brush, and natural boar bristle round brush (Sally's)
- forgot to Mention my favorite hairspray!! Big Sexy Hair Spray and Play
- Remington Blow Dryer (Wal-Mart)
- Hot Tools curling irons (Ulta)

What are some of your holy grail hair care products?
